Harris In Wonderland |
I work at a small exotic pet store in Canton CT called Harris in Wonderland. This job has provided me with the opportunity to learn about many of this worlds fascinating and unique creatures and their impacts on the environments they live in, I have also learned about the impact of the pet industry on these places.
Working at such a small locally owned business has also taught me about many of the intricacies of operating such a business in the United States. |
Community service through volunteer firefighting:
I am a member of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department's Explorer program, a program that allows people under the age of 18 gain firsthand firefighting experience and training. Explorers run weekly drills and respond to calls, where we help make life easier for the full members by doing things such as bring them the tools they need and man the external hoses so they can focus on interior work. Explorers learn how to help people out of car wrecks and anywhere else they may be stuck. Although we are not considered full members we are given gear and are allowed to do real firefighter work. |
This is a Mini research project I completed in Global Studies. This project looks into the various spiritual meanings and importance of animals to global cultures. I find this topic to be fascinating and it helps form my idea that the environment surrounding a culture plays an important role in shaping its customs and ideals. my interest in this subject started with my employment at an exotic pet store which has allowed me to see lots of animals and understand the roll they play in their native habitat.
